Chloride

chloride

1. Why is this mineral important?

Chloride is an essential mineral and one of the most important electrolytes in the body. It plays a decisive role in regulating fluid balance, digestion and the acid–base equilibrium. Chloride is a main component of stomach acid (hydrochloric acid), which is necessary for digesting food.

2. What do we need this mineral for?

Chloride is needed for: Fluid and electrolyte balance: together with sodium and potassium, it regulates the body's water balance. Acid–base balance: helps to keep the pH value of the blood stable. Digestion: an essential component of stomach acid, which is necessary for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. Nerve and muscle function: supports signal transmission in nerve cells and contributes to muscle contraction.

3. Signs of a deficiency of this mineral in the body

A chloride deficiency (hypochloraemia) can result from a heavy loss of fluids (e.g. vomiting, heavy sweating or diarrhoea) and shows itself through: fatigue and weakness, muscle cramps or twitching, low blood pressure and dehydration, digestive problems due to insufficient stomach acid production, confusion or concentration problems.

4. Possible consequences of a deficiency

A long-term chloride deficiency can cause serious health problems, such as: Disorders of the digestive system: too little stomach acid can impair nutrient absorption. Electrolyte imbalance: can lead to circulatory problems and muscle weakness. Impaired kidney function: chloride helps the kidneys to regulate the salt and water balance.

5. Requirement and recommendation

The recommended daily intake of chloride varies depending on age and sex. General recommendations are: adults: 2,300 mg per day; children and adolescents: 1,800–2,300 mg per day, depending on age. Chloride is mainly obtained through table salt (sodium chloride), which is contained in many foods. Good sources are sea salt, dairy products, fish, meat and some vegetables. If needed, or in case of a deficiency, we recommend our medicinal and mineral waters – ideally, however, this should be discussed with a doctor.
