Sulfate
1. Why is this mineral important?
Sulfate (SO₄²⁻) is an essential mineral that plays an important role in many biological processes. It is a component of proteins, enzymes and cartilage tissue and contributes to the body's detoxification. Sulfate is found in many mineral waters and is needed by the body for metabolism and for the health of skin, hair and joints.
2. What do we need this mineral for?
Sulfate is needed for: Detoxification and liver function: supports the breakdown and excretion of harmful substances. Cartilage and joint health: a component of chondroitin sulfate, which is important for healthy joints. Skin, hair and nails: promotes the formation of keratin and collagen, which are essential for the stability and elasticity of skin, hair and nails. Digestion: promotes the production of bile acids, which are necessary for fat digestion.
3. Signs of a deficiency of this mineral in the body
A sulfate deficiency is rare, as the body can obtain it from sulphur-containing amino acids in food. However, a deficiency could show itself through: weaker hair and brittle nails, restricted detoxification function of the liver, digestive problems, especially with fat digestion, joint complaints due to insufficient formation of cartilage substances.
4. Possible consequences of a deficiency
A long-term sulfate deficiency can cause the following health problems: Impaired liver function: reduced ability to excrete toxins. Weaker skin and hair: reduced keratin formation can lead to brittle hair and weak skin. Joint problems: possible impairment of cartilage health, which can lead to pain and stiffness.
5. Requirement and recommendation
There is no official recommended daily intake for sulfate, as the body usually obtains it from food. Good sources are: Mineral water: sulfate-rich water can contribute to covering the requirement. Protein-rich foods: meat, fish, eggs, pulses and dairy products contain sulphur-containing amino acids that are converted into sulfate. Vegetables: onions, garlic, cabbage and asparagus are natural sources of sulfate. Some mineral waters contain sulfate in high concentrations, which can promote digestion. Medicinal waters rich in sulfate in particular are used to support the liver and the digestive system. If needed, or in case of a deficiency, we recommend our medicinal and mineral waters – ideally, however, this should be discussed with a doctor.
