chloride
1. Why is this mineral important?
Chloride is an essential mineral and one of the most important electrolytes in the body. It plays a crucial role in regulating fluid balance, digestion, and acid-base balance. Chloride is a major component of gastric acid (hydrochloric acid), which is necessary for digesting food.
2. What do we need this mineral for?
Chloride is needed for: Fluid and electrolyte balance: Together with sodium and potassium, it regulates the body's water balance. Acid-base balance: Helps maintain a stable blood pH. Digestion: An essential component of gastric acid, which is necessary for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. Nerve and muscle function: Supports nerve impulse transmission and contributes to muscle contraction.
3. Signs of a deficiency of this mineral in the body
Chloride deficiency (hypochloremia) can be caused by severe fluid loss (e.g., vomiting, excessive sweating, or diarrhea) and manifests itself through: fatigue and weakness, muscle cramps or twitching, low blood pressure and dehydration, digestive problems due to insufficient stomach acid production, confusion, or difficulty concentrating.
4. Possible consequences of a deficiency
A long-term chloride deficiency can cause serious health problems, such as: Digestive system disorders: Too little stomach acid can impair nutrient absorption. Electrolyte imbalance: Can lead to circulatory problems and muscle weakness. Impaired kidney function: Chloride helps the kidneys regulate salt and water balance.
5. Need or recommendation
The recommended daily intake of chloride varies depending on age and gender. General recommendations are: Adults: 2300 mg per day; Children and adolescents: 1800–2300 mg per day, depending on age. Chloride is primarily ingested through table salt (sodium chloride), which is present in many foods. Good sources include sea salt, dairy products, fish, meat, and some vegetables. If needed or in case of deficiency, we recommend our medicinal and mineral waters; however, this should ideally be done in consultation with a doctor.
