1. Why is this mineral important?

Manganese is an essential trace element required for many biological processes in the body. It plays a central role in metabolism, bone formation, antioxidant protection, and wound healing. Furthermore, manganese is important for the function of various enzymes.

2. What do we need this mineral for?

Manganese is needed for: Bone metabolism: Supports the development and maintenance of strong bones. Antioxidant protection: Component of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), which protects cells from oxidative stress. Energy and carbohydrate metabolism: Important for the conversion of nutrients into energy. Brain function and nerves: Contributes to the production of neurotransmitters, which are important for memory and concentration. Wound healing and collagen production: Supports the formation of connective tissue, cartilage, and skin.

3. Signs of a deficiency of this mineral in the body. A manganese deficiency is rare, but can occur and cause the following symptoms: weakness or fatigue; impaired bone health (e.g., brittle bones); concentration problems or memory loss; delayed wound healing; impaired sugar metabolism.

4. Possible Consequences of a Deficiency A long-term manganese deficiency can lead to serious health problems, including: Osteoporosis: Increased risk of bone loss and fragility. Neurological disorders: Impaired cognitive function and memory problems. Impaired carbohydrate metabolism: Possible disturbances in blood sugar levels.

5. Requirements and Recommendations: The recommended daily intake of manganese varies depending on age and gender. General recommendations are: Adult men: 2.3 mg per day; Adult women: 1.8 mg per day; Children and adolescents: 0.6–2.2 mg per day, depending on age. Good sources of manganese include: Whole grain products: oatmeal, brown rice, and wheat bran; Nuts and seeds: hazelnuts, almonds, and pumpkin seeds; Legumes: lentils, beans, and peas; Green leafy vegetables: spinach and kale; Mineral water: Some mineral waters contain manganese in its natural form. A balanced manganese level is important for health. However, excessive amounts can be harmful and cause neurological symptoms. If needed or in case of deficiency, we recommend our medicinal and mineral waters; however, this should ideally be done in consultation with a doctor.
